The greatest night of British athletics
Wow, what a night – and I was only watching it TV! Once in a while, probably a decade everything is set for something spectacular to happen. And then once in a generation it actually happens! And last night was one of those nights. Having been in the Olympic stadium two days before it made me incredibly jealous not to be in that stadium last night.
Everyone in Britain knows the story, and it’s been written up rather well here. If you wanted to win a medal last night you needed to slip on a pair of Union Jack shorts. All the athletes said that they had never experienced anything like it and not just the British athletes. It’s made us all very proud and Sebastian Coe is looking like someone who should be running the country never mind the Olympic games!
For a country of our size to be third in the medal table is astonishing. China and the USA have 54 medals in total and we have 29, but their populations are twenty times larger and five times larger respectively, so you could say that pound for pound we’re now the greatest sporting nation on earth!
I just hope we can keep it up and that the weather holds up for the big events, but so far this is just the tonic that the country needed. I can’t remember the feel good factor being so high in Britain – even when we had money. At £9 Billion, it’s looking like money well spent!
